Judo / Jujitsu

Jujitsu, “the art of suppleness,” dates back to feudal Japan as the first martial art of the samurai as a method for defeating against armed and armored opponents. Techniques in Jujitsu rely on turning an opponent’s energy to one’s advantage.   Most modern Japanese martial arts, including Judo, Kendo, Karate, Sumo, Kobudo and Aikido to name a few, were derived from Jujitsu.

Judo, “the gentle way,” was created in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano in an effort to practice Jujitsu moves repeatedly and safely with others, while still keeping the martial way in tacked.  Today, Judo is a very popular Olympic sport (introduced in 1964), and, in one form or another, has become an essential part of anyone’s serious training in self-defense. With Judo being a modern and refined form of Jujitsu, it is a powerful martial art that teaches throwing, grappling, joint locks and choking techniques to control any opponent.  It has even inspired other martial arts like Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Both Judo and Jujitsu are a tremendous workout for the body, mind and spirit.  Even though some “sport” judo schools concentrate on standing throws and some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools that teach just ground techniques, at the Martial Arts of the Palm Beaches, we put equal emphasis on standing and ground techniques.
